_Muse, Jay-Z, Gorillaz to Headline Coachella 2010

coachella 2010 Muse, Jay Z, Gorillaz to Headline Coachella 2010

Why are there four question marks beside Thom Yorke? Is he not confirmed yet? It would be a bummer if he didn’t show up. Guess they want to be mysterious…

All I can say is that I wish I could go. I love most of the artists playing this year. Who’s going?

_Hot Chip – Hand Me Down Your Love

hotchipcov4522 Hot Chip Hand Me Down Your Love

Sorry for the slow updates, I have a lot of mid-terms and final exams right now in school, and swamped with work so my time on the computer has been decreasing significantly. I’m almost done with exams though so expect a lot more posts.

Over the weekend, Hot Chip’s album, “One Life Stand” leaked over the internet if you haven’t known already. I’ve listened to it a couple times and it’s definitely an album that takes time to appreciate and grows on you instead of hitting you hard in the ears.

I was particularily interested in the 2nd track, “Hand Me Down Your Love”. I definitely really like the contrast between the drums and the piano. The repetitive lyrics that Alexis sings is great as well. The use of violins blends is also great to listen to. Overall, probably one of my favorite tracks from the album.

_Dan Deacon – Woof Woof (Music Video)

The video to “Woof Woof” by Dan Deacon is probably the best 11 minute video that I’ve seen in my entire life. It’s basically like Sesame Street on acid/weed.

Also, it had the best storyline ever. It was amazingly odd.

_Justin Vernon – A Song For a Lover of Long Ago

justinvernon Justin Vernon A Song For a Lover of Long Ago

Bon Iver put out one of the best indie folk albums of the last decade with 2008′s For Emma, Forever Ago, but what did frontman Justin Vernon do in his days before he was singing about “Skinny Love?”

Well, Vernon released an EP titled Hazleton with a track called “Song For a Lover of Long Ago.” The song doesn’t deviate too far away from Bon Iver’s sound. It spans just over eight minutes, so it requires a little patience, but Vernon is as intimate and heartfelt as ever on this recording.

_Vampire Weekend – Giant

Vampire+Weekend+Contra Vampire Weekend GiantI’ve never seen Vampire Weekend live. So I don’t know what songs they play live during their set, but apparently they played a song called “Little Giant” during their shows in their days when they released their self-titled album.

I haven’t heard about it until now, and it’s called “Giant” now. Serving as a b-side/ bonus track on Contra, the song definitely fits into the Contra sound. After listening to it on Youtube, it looks like they didn’t make any major changes to it.

You may have noticed something wrong with the first sentence of this post. “I’ve never seen Vampire Weekend live.” This might be the second time that I’m saying this on the blog, but they’re coming to Edmonton and I am DEFINITELY going. BOO YA.

_Who Is iamamiwhoami?

Some person with the name ‘iamamiwhoami‘ has been sending links to these two Youtube videos of some blond musician who is still unknown to blogs. The woman in it is pictured licking a tree and doing other weird things to some poppy, bubble beats. It’s been viral for a couple days now, and everyone is guessing who it is.

Who is this chick? A lot of people are saying it’s Christina Aguilera (I honestly hope its not her, I’m liking these videos and completely hate Christina) (note: check our ‘Indie the new Outie’ article in our magazine) and Goldfrapp. It could also possible be Lady Gaga?

I think it’s Goldfrapp. Brad convinced me with some of his pointers. Turns out as well the Twitter account is fake.

Whatever this woman is doing, it’s good publicity. Either way, both Xtina and Goldfrapp are probably enjoying the publicity they’re getting. Check out the video that was released last month:

_The Knife – Colouring Pigeons

colouringofpigeons452 The Knife Colouring Pigeons
After a long hiatus and an excellent solo album by Karin, the Knife are back to give us more music for our already salivating mouths. But, don’t expect the convention from this duo, as they are always deviating from the beaten path. This time around they have chosen to create pieces of music designed to fit into an opera. This is all with the help of some friends, Mt. Sims and Planningtorock, who are also electronic artists.

What we have here is definitely not what i expected from the Knife. It’s not exactly a bad thing, but it’s not really what I wanted from them. Albeit interesting and very well crafted, I can’t see myself listening to this song on a regular basis like their previous work. It’s nice to see them venturing off in different directions and really taking the theatrics of their live performances to the next level, but it lacks what I know and love the Knife for.

Have a listen and really take time to consume the music, it works extremely well for what is supposed to be done with it and I can certainly give them kudos for really taking their music in a different directions and being creative. I just hope one day this opera that they and Hotel Pro Forma have planned (which will be about Darwin’s theory of evolution) will make it’s way into the states so I can finally see them live.
