Yesterday night Vampire Weekend performed “Cousins” on David Letterman, and Ezra even added in some special effects such as ‘distorting’ or ‘compressing’ his vocals during the performance.
I was reading some of the comments on Youtube on this video, and some person claimed that they are using autotune. They are in fact, not. Can’t you hear it? I also read another comment that went like this:
“I listened to Contra… I didnt think I would like it. Its a good techno album but, like all sophomore albums, (or so it would seem) this one doesn’t really hit me like the first one did.”
Uhh…what? Vampire Weekend is not techno at all…not even close. What the hell are you talking about?

Autotune huh…
If the person thought distortion was autotune then yes! They used tons of autotune!
(but actually I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a subtle amount thrown in there. It’s really not that uncommon for live vocals. Even in ‘indie’ music)I’ll admit I’m really not a fan of the song. I think it’s the frantically picked guitar line that kills it for me. Kind of a weak Dick Dale or something of the likes.
It has it’s catchy bits but the whole thing just doesn’t quite vibe with me. I can’t comment on the rest of the album because I haven’t got around to listening to it yet, but if this is the song they chose to push out as their first ’single’ then I’m interested to see if the rest of the album is a bit less frantic.
But hey, this is music and everyone has their own taste. And with such a hyped up album people are going to be disappointed unless they created the next Dark Side of the Moon or Pet Sounds or something of the likes.
