_Little Comets – “Joanna”

Never have I heard the term “kitchen sink indie music” before until I came across this band, thanks to Will. When you think about it, kitchen sink music sounds like something very raw, very grounded because a kitchen is a place where you make food to feed yourself. This is how and why Little Comets are described as that – they are the truest and rawest form of British (since they are from  Britain) indie rock.

“Joanna” is one of the tracks off of their TBR debut album, ‘In Search of Elusive Little Comets’. The first thing that drew me into the band was Robert Cole’s distinct, sassy voice who had a short acapella solo in the beginning of the song. The music is catchy and takes me to a place where I feel relaxed, the state I currently need to be in.

_La Femme – “Sur La Planche”

La+Femme+l 46cbe4c849df424aa6db02acbb34 La Femme Sur La Planche

A couple days ago I discovered a new gem in my inbox, and they’re a band called La Femme. I don’t know anything about them yet, but what I do know of the French lo-fi surfer band is that they have already captured my attention from their only song that has been released, “Sur La Planche” (which translates to ‘on a (surf) board’, thanks to my 12 years of French classes).

You might not understand what they’re singing, but what you will figure out is that it’s pretty catchy. The first thing that they remind me of is The Drums – and when I first discovered them I knew they were going to be big. Even their debut singles are about the same thing – surfing. I know that The Drums can’t surf, but I wonder if La Femme can. Listen to it and let me know what you think.

“On a surf board / on the beach, on the wave, I’m searching for sensations / on a surfboard, in the tubes, I’m searching for sensations / you better not try and stop me from riding that wave, I’m invincible / if you dare push me in the tube, I will be waiting for you on the beach, on the wave”

_Sufjan Stevens – “Too Much” (Music Video)

Fans who have seen Sufjan Stevens live lately have already seen his music video to “Too Much” without even realizing it, as he’s been playing it as the backdrop to the song. Anyways, this stop motion video is super psychedelic, featuring 3 people dressing up and dancing to the song with colorful backgrounds that simply remind me of ‘flashes’ from the addicting NBC hit show Chuck.

_Patrick Wolf – “Time Of My Life” (Ceephax Remix)

Patrick+Wolf+2 Patrick Wolf Time Of My Life (Ceephax Remix)

I’ve been playing Patrick Wolf’s “Time of My Life” at work a lot, and one of my friends told me that the song was ‘weird’. Does the song seem like it would sound weird to non-alt listeners? I thought it sounded like one of his most radio-friendly songs.

Anyways, I”m finally glad to have received remixes of “Time of My Life” in my inbox because this means I can stop listening to the original on repeat, and it won’t sound as ‘weird’ to people who aren’t familiar with Patrick Wolf. My favorite of the bunch I have received is the Ceephax remix, mainly because it’s a more electro mix and has amazing bass. Check it out:

_Gorillaz – “Crystalised” (XX Cover)

Gorillaz performed a few songs when they dropped by BBC’s Live Lounge, a cover of the XX’s “Crystallized” being one of them. In order to be praised for a cover, you’ve got to be able to transform a song into your own hands but still keep the raw skeleton and the idea of the original, and Gorillaz did just that. They managed to make an already daunting tune sound even more haunting.

I’m a big fan of remixes with a lot of bass and minimal, repetitive lyrics. No wonder I liked Myndset’s remix of Drake’s “Fancy”. The track’s slow repetition of a climb to a climax set a mood of mysteriousness. If you didn’t like the original (who wouldn’t?), then this will change your mind. And just as you’re getting into the track, the remix is over so you’ll be playing it on repeat. Check out more of Myndset’s work on his Soundcloud.

_jj – “Let Them”

jj jj Let Them

It’s been too long since jj released new material. That being said, it seems like jj loves Akon or something. “Let Them” is the third song they’ve created sampling the horrible autotune-loving ‘singer’. The song just further proves that they are flawless at what they do: producing splendid chilled, laid back tunes and sampling Akon. I wonder if he even knows about them?

_Egyptian Hip Hop – “Rad Pitt” (D/R/U/G/S Remix)

Egyptian+Hip+Hop+ehhbestphoto Egyptian Hip Hop Rad Pitt (D/R/U/G/S Remix)

I discovered this remix last month but I totally forgot about posting it until now. One of my favorite rising acts Egyptian Hip Hop had their track “Rad Pitt” remixed by another cool act, D/R/U/G/S. The result is a blurry, dreamy, hypnotizing mix that basically makes you feel like you’re on drugs. The mix doesn’t feature much of “Rad Pitt”, but otherwise it’s a completely sweaty treat.
