_Friendly Fires – “The Edge of Glory” (Lady Gaga Cover)

friendly fires Friendly Fires The Edge of Glory (Lady Gaga Cover)

I’m a major Gaga stan, and also a huge Friendly Fires fan. The result of Friendly Fires covering Lady Gaga’s “The Edge of Glory” on BBC’s Live Lounge is a starry and wonderful cover. People who never really liked the original are bound to like this. “The Edge of Glory” is definitely one of her more universal and cover-able tracks, and it makes total sense that they have decided to cover it.

_Best Coast – “The End of the World”

Best Coast Boyfriend Best Coast The End of the World

Even though this should have been released before the Rapture, Best Coast covered Skeeter Davis’ “The End of the World” to celebrate our survival of the fictional apocalypse. It’s a really dainty track for the summer sunshine band, with the vocals and styling slowed down similar to Zooey Deschanel/She & Him.

_Peaches – “Turn It On” (Franz Ferdinand Cover)

Peaches+PNG Peaches Turn It On (Franz Ferdinand Cover)

Peaches cover Franz Ferdinand’s “Turn It On” for their exclusive Record Day covers EP in her signature bad-ass electro style. She rocks it, and if I didn’t know it was a cover, I would have thought that it was a brand new Peaches track.

_Birdy – “Skinny Love” (Bon Iver Cover)

A mysterious 14 year old girl named Birdy has been on repeat on my iPod in the past couple days. She delicately and beautifully covered Bon Iver’s “Skinny Love“, and if you’re not falling in love with her voice right away (which is kind of pedophile-ish, sorry), then something is wrong with you. Covering Bon Iver and pulling it off is hard to do, which she does effortlessly while playing the piano. There’s something very raw and inviting about her vocals that trickles a sense of maturity in her innocent, youthful personality. I want to hear more from her!

I’m not a big Britney Spears fan, but I do like a couple of her songs on Femme Fatale. One of them is her 2nd single, “Till The World Ends”, and the Morning Benders seems to have reworked, remixed, and covered the track all at once. It’s generally a remix, but you can hear traces of the band echoing in the background. They didn’t necessarily make it any better, but it’s a content, groovy version of the club jam.

_Ellie Goulding – “Heartbeats” (The Knife Cover)

l Ellie Goulding Heartbeats (The Knife Cover)Ellie Goulding covers are my favorite – I’d rather prefer listening to her covers than her original songs. She’s covered several artists like Sam Sparro, Rihanna, and Bon Iver. Her most recent was Jose Gonzalez’s rendition of “Heartbeats” by The Knife. Unlike her other covers, she blatantly copies his exact version. It’s definitely not the most creative, but lovely nonetheless.

_Hercules and Love Affair – “Shelter” (The xx cover)

EPHELIDE HERCULES+AND+LOVE+AFFAIR Hercules And Love Affair 02 Hercules and Love Affair – Shelter (The xx cover)

Hercules and Love Affair have covered The xx’s “Shelter” as a b-side to their current single, “Painted Eyes”. I always find it even more interesting when artists cover The xx, since their sound can be interpreted and can be versatile in so many different ways. Somehow this version just reminds me of Beth Ditto covering it, it’s a very monotone dance version of the song.

_Bat For Lashes – “Strangelove” (Depeche Mode cover)

Bat+for+Lashes+PNG Bat For Lashes Strangelove (Depeche Mode cover)

It seems like it’s been a while since I’ve mentioned or heard of Bat For Lashes. The most recent release she had was her contribution to the Twilight soundtrack, which wasn’t too long ago (but seems like it). Maybe her release of a Depeche Mode cover “Strangelove” (which is being used for a Gucci campaign) is hinting that she’s back on the scene with a new album or EP release.

I don’t know much of Depeche Mode’s music, and to be honest, I wouldn’t have known that this was a cover if no one mentioned it. Natasha Khan completely transformed it to not sound too disco-y. What’s funny is that when I listened to the original after hearing this, I noticed a striking similarity even though the styles are a bit different.
