_Everything Everything – “What’s My Name” (Rihanna Cover)

15 Everything Everything Whats My Name (Rihanna Cover)

The boys  seem to be losing their minds and the alzheimer’s disease that Rihanna seems to have started is starting to worsen. Yes, it can be passed on. A sign that may indicate if you have it is if you ask the confusing and lifelong question: “What’s my name?” “OH NA NA WHAT’S MY FUCKING NAME?”

But seriously, everything about Everything Everything’s cover of Rihanna’s “What’s My Name” rocks. EVERYTHING. Jonathan’s squeaky vocals combined with the presence of some girl’s (whom I thought was Fergie at first) voice add to this unique, acoustic version of the raggae influenced r&b-pop song. A note to the band: your name isn’t Rihanna.

This was me trying to be funny. I guess I have an odd sense of humor. Enjoy:

_Vampire Weekend – “Fight For This Love” (Cheryl Cole Cover)

vw Vampire Weekend Fight For This Love (Cheryl Cole Cover)

When Vampire Weekend covers a song, you know that it’s most likely going to be good. They definitely like to take risks, that’s for sure. They took a huge leap for their Radio 1 Live Lounge performance, covering UK British pop Cheryl Cole’s 2009 single “Fight For This Love”. I must admit that I’ve never heard of this song until now. I’ve heard of her name tons before, but I never put a face or voice to her name. It’s not just me though, Ezra thought the same:

“One day we were in the car driving to the airport and we heard a song that reminded us of K-Ci & JoJo’s ‘All My Life’, which is a very important song for people our age. We were like, ‘This song is awesome.’ Then we saw her on tabloids. Who knew she was famous?”

_Ellie Goulding – “Only Girl” (Rihanna Cover)

ZYczN Ellie Goulding Only Girl (Rihanna Cover)

Ellie Goulding attempts at covering Rihanna’s smash dance pop hit “Only Girl” during Live Lounge at Radio 1, and it is without a doubt, splendid. The heavy bass and electro dance beats are stripped away, leaving only a very raw Ellie Goulding accented voice with acoustic instruments and very talented violin players. I can only say I love this song and Ellie so much more.

_Benjamin Francis Leftwich – “Rebellion” (Arcade Fire Cover)

I may or may have not discovered Benjamin Francis Leftwich through this soothing cover of Arcade Fire’s “Rebellion” – which is my favorite Arcade Fire song. Now that I know of him, the rising musician is definitely on my radar. Benjamin’s stripped take on the cover is very dreamy and serene, and the result is a chilling, raw alternative folk song.

_Gorillaz – “Crystalised” (XX Cover)

Gorillaz performed a few songs when they dropped by BBC’s Live Lounge, a cover of the XX’s “Crystallized” being one of them. In order to be praised for a cover, you’ve got to be able to transform a song into your own hands but still keep the raw skeleton and the idea of the original, and Gorillaz did just that. They managed to make an already daunting tune sound even more haunting.

_Lissie – “Pursuit of Happiness” (Kid Cudi Cover)

I never knew who Lissie was until her cover of “Bad Romance” was a blogging phenomenon. I guess she likes to cover songs, and she does it well. She covered Kid Cudi’s “Pursuit of Happiness” at Brighton’s music festival The Great Escape back in May, but now there is an official, HD video of it.

She’s great. Based on the covers I’ve heard from her, I know I love her already. Let’s just hope her debut album ‘Catching A Tiger’, which came out yesterday, is as great as what I know from her already.

_Kelis Covers La Roux’s “In For The Kill”

Sorry for not posting for the past couple days and of the lack of posts the past couple weeks. I’m working on a new image for the blog, hopefully to reveal later this week!

flesh tone dog Kelis Covers La Rouxs In For The Kill

Oh, Kelis.

I missed your “Milkshake” days. The fun times I had shaking my thang and gettin’ dirty to Milkshake back in my junior high school dances.  That song was hot and just downright dirty. The video for the song was sexy and ghetto fabulous. But you’ve evoluted since then, and now is making proper dance club songs, and I’ve been maturing my taste levels with you ever since then. You’ve always amazed me with your music and I love what you’re doing.

Kelis was reported to be working and collaborating with electropop duo La Roux, but it wasn’t specified for what it’s for. We don’t hear anything of La Roux in Kelis’ album ‘Fleshtone’.

Anyways, she covered La Roux‘s song that we all know and love, “In For The Kill“. It’s not great, but it’s not horrible. Of course no one can compete with Elly Jackson’s high notes. Kelis tones the song down to a much lower octave, which doesn’t seem to work for this song if you already know what the original sounds like. Her voice seems muted and blank in this cover for BBC Radio 1. And the boppy beats don’t seem to work for her style as well.

_Two Door Cinema Club – “Poker Face” (Lady Gaga Cover)

Oh wow, this is more than a week late, I forgot to post this (it was saved as a draft).

Two Door Cinema Club covered “Poker Face” by Lady Gaga for Fluctat.net. While this might not sound the most original (there are tons of videos on YouTube like this), I like listening to this knowing that it’s Two Door Cinema Club singing this, and they tried. Download the song over at PMA.
